Living Lands: Place Names of the Adirondacks

July 20, 2022 @ 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm

Free

Join Pete Nelson to learn the fascinating stories of some of the names in the region and the people whose presence and labors defined them. This presentation will focus on early mapping and surveying in the Lake George area and include the history of some of the place names that are connected to that mapping and exploration; examine how all-but-forgotten Adirondack history pre-1850 had a profound effect upon the shaping of America.

Pete argues that the Adirondack frontier up until the mid 1800’s was critical to the development of our nation, just as the western frontier was later. He will also mention the Adirondack Diversity Initiative’s current efforts in the Park, and the relevance of those efforts to economic, environmental, recreational and other aspects of Adirondack life.

Pete is a co-founder of ADK Diversity Initiative and an adjunct faculty member at North Country Community College.
