Top Reasons...Enjoy hiking? Visiting the Adirondacks? Hiking in the Lake George region of the Adirondacks can be particularly rewarding. You will experience some of the most beautiful and breathtaking views in the area. There are many different trails to choose from in the Lake George area ranging in difficulty from easy to strenuous. Hikers can choose to hike on a flat trail alongside the Lake, do more serious mountain climbing or even spread their trip over two days.
A nice hike that provides great views of Lake George and is relatively easy is Shelving Rock Falls. A more challenging hike can be found at Sleeping Beauty. And, one of the best mountains to do it all at – easy, strenuous, and even overnight wilderness camping - is the Tongue Mountain Range.
The Tongue Mountain Range has over 18 miles of foot trails to choose from and offers incredible views of Lake George. The hike up Tongue Mountain is about 5.4 miles long. It has an elevation change of 200 feet. If you enjoy wilderness camping, there are two sets of lean-tos on Tongue Mountain about 5 miles apart from each other. The lean-to closest to the top offers beautiful views. This would be the perfect place to set up for a night of tranquility listening to the sounds of nature. Be sure to pack in an adequate supply of water, as Tongue Mountain can be very dry. And, lean-tos are ‘first come – first serve’- so make sure you are prepared with a tent, should you find both lean-tos occupied.
Day hiking, backpacking and wilderness camping can be a fun, educational and rewarding experience if the proper precautions are taken. Note - Tongue Mountain is inhabited by timber rattlesnakes. This is not a dangerous situation as long as ordinary precautions are taken. Stay on the trail, wear proper hiking gear – such as sturdy, high hiking boots, and if you are climbing or scrambling over rocks, use care where you place your hands.
It’s also important to note that cell phone reception in some areas of the Adirondacks can be spotty. Bringing a cell phone to call in the troops when you are in trouble is not the best way to plan for an emergency. Instead be prepared -- Always pack a map, trail guide or guidebook, and compass. Check in (and out) at the trail register, hike with a partner, and always let others know where you are hiking and when your expected return date or time is.
Always bring plenty of fresh water, especially in the Tongue Mountain range, or pack water purification tables or a water filter system. Carry a first aid kit incase of an injury. Pack waterproof matches and bring extra clothing, dress in layers and be prepared for a variety of weather conditions. Keep your food safe, especially when camping overnight – use a “bear bag” system to keep from attracting wildlife.
Follow these guidelines, and backpacking through the wilderness in the beautiful Lake George area will be a pleasant and enjoyable experience.
