No Ice? No Problem! Winter Carnival on Land!

Nothing like the “no ice” issue can squash the anticipated fun of the Winter Carnival in Lake George Village!  There will be plenty of fun and excitement on land too. From the Post Star yesterday, “That means the four-weekend event, which has for years been held on the ice near Shepard Park Beach, will have to move inland. It will also cost the carnival a couple of events. But organizers are adapting. “We’re cool,” said Carnival Committee Co-Chairwoman Nancy Nichols.” Discovery Channel and its sister networks are slated to cover the carnival’s opening weekend so the national attention is exciting. That got me to thinking about how often the lake never completely froze over. Records have been kept from about 1907 and actually around the beginning of the 1900′s Lake George did not freeze …1910-11, 1918-19 and then not again until 1991-2, 1998-99, 2001-2 and this year. The records indicate that there may have been ice, but that the lake did not freeze completely. Interesting that at the beginning of both centuries, we seemingly have had a warming trend. I looked into other big lakes like Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire and Sebago Lake in southern Maine. They indicated the same years with no ice but Sebago had far more no freeze incidents. So we are not unique with our lake not totally freezing over.

    From last years outhouse races!

So bundle up and get ready to hike around Lake George Village and enjoy the spectacle, hoopla, and family fun. You can still enjoy the lake from the shoreline unless of course you want to do the Polar Plunge!
